![]() So what’s a self respecting photo-guru supposed to do? Test it for themselves, of course! ![]() ![]() Of course there are a pro version at $99, and a “server” version for $199/month…much more expensive for additional workflow benefits. Actually, combing over their website, they scrupulously avoid making that exact claim, but that is certainly the implication, and at $29 for the base version, it seems like a relatively low cost for the benefit. Well along comes JEPEGmini with just that promise! JPEGmini claims to reduce the size of the image, faster, with better quality than you can using a normal Photoshop centric workflow. Its kind of like VHS vs Betamax (millennials should Google this) – a basically inferior method of compression stays in use simply because everyone is already using it, thank you very much! Can we make a better jpeg using the exact same standard, so that it is easily integrated into your workflow, and still universally accepted? The plain-Jane jpeg is still the format of choice when it comes to photographic images on the internet. Why shouldn’t there be a better jpeg? Of course there already is a superior image compression format-its available inside Photoshop, no less, and its called jpeg 2000 (because it was invented way back in the year 2000.) Unfortunately, jpeg 2000 is largely ignored by just about everyone. Yes… someone decided that what the world really needs is another way to generate jpegs, one that doesn’t suck! Well… nothing really wrong with that idea, other than the part that jpegs suck… but I’m getting ahead of myself here. I was recently invited to test out a new software, plugin and stand-alone, for generating jpegs. If nothing else, it will help inspire people to get into photography as it never ceases to blow people’s minds! People always ask what are we doing and when people see the art we’re creating they’re like “holy s***”.Īnd speaking of people asking what are we doing, when we started the video we got questioned by a police officer then detained by a secret service officer as what we were doing looked very unusual.JPEGmini comes as a stand-alone app & as plugins for Photoshop & Lightroom. It also takes a patient person and someone who can follow simple directions - lol. I probably use it only a handful of times throughout the year as it’s tricky to use - in terms of having a steady handed person moving the Pixelstick. If you love shooting at night as much as I do the Pixelstick is a cool toy to have in your bag of tricks. According to the bike share app - Justin and I covered 80 miles! Earlier in the day we rented bikes and looked for the perfect spots. ![]() It also helps to scout out locations beforehand so you’re more efficient with your time. It also helps to have a flat surface as if it’s uneven the image will be wobbly because the person walking with the Pixelstick will have a hard time walking straight. Ideally you want it to be dark behind the image, if not it’ll get lost with the brightness (as in the Street Fighter image in the video). Chose a low iso and as for the aperture decide how bright or dark you want the image to be and adjust accordingly.ģ - Put something on the floor so the person holding the Pixelstick can start at the same spot every time.Ĥ - Pre focus and then set the camera to manual focus.ĥ - When your parter is ready and says go - use a remote to trigger the camera. So if an image is 6 seconds, I’ll use an 8 second shutter speed. The cool thing about the Pixelstick is that you can load any image you want! As for the process:ġ - Do a countdown as to how long the image takes to play.Ģ - Set a shutter speed and add a few seconds. I knew I was going to get a lot of questions like “how did you do that?” so I figured I make a behind the scenes video. I decided to bring what’s called a Pixelstick. So all that being said - we were only in town for a day and a half and I wanted to do something special. In just 1 museum you can literally spend a week trying to see everything. Visiting Washington DC is one of those trips where you have to be selective. As a photographer sometimes we have to seek quality over quantity.
